This policy is provided by Frowning Gorilla Ltd ("Frowning Gorilla", "we", "us"), a company registered in England and Wales. It covers the Foista app.
What data does Foista collect?
None. Frowning Gorilla does not collect, transmit to itself, store on its own servers, or share any personal information.
The app has no analytics, no crash reporting service, no advertising SDK, and no third-party services of any kind. There is no account and nothing to sign in to. It does not know who you are, where you are, or how you use it.
Where is your data stored?
On your device. The game keeps your saved match, your record against each opponent, your house rules and your other preferences in the app's own storage on the device you are playing on.
That is the whole of it unless you turn on iCloud, which is off when you install the app. You will find it under Settings → Backup, where it says "This device only" until you change it.
What happens if I turn on iCloud?
A copy of the same few kilobytes is kept in your own private iCloud account, using Apple's iCloud key-value storage, so a game started on your iPhone can be carried on from your iPad. It covers:
- Your games — the match in progress, your saved games, and the game you have chosen to play.
- Your records — your wins and losses.
- You — your name and photograph, and a photograph for the back of the cards, if you have chosen them.
- A small signal from each device — the kind of device it is (for example “iPhone”), a random eight-character code that tells your devices apart, and the time. The app uses it only to check that your own devices can hear each other.
Because that copy is held in your own iCloud account:
- It is held by Apple, under your personal Apple Account and Apple's iCloud terms.
- It syncs only between your own devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Frowning Gorilla has no access to it. We cannot read it, retrieve it, or recover it for you.
- Turn it off, or sign out of iCloud, and syncing stops. What is on each device stays on it.
Apple's privacy policy governs how iCloud handles your data. You can read it at apple.com/legal/privacy.
My name and my photograph
You can give yourself a name and a photograph so that the game can use them at the table. Both are optional, the game plays perfectly well without either, and you can remove them at any time in Settings.
The photograph is chosen through Apple's own photo picker. Foista never asks for access to your photo library and never receives it — Apple hands the app the single picture you chose and nothing else. What the app keeps is a small copy, a few hundred pixels square, which is all it needs to draw you at the table.
Neither your name nor your photograph is ever sent to us. They stay on your device, and travel to your own iCloud account only if you have turned iCloud on.
What about network connections?
The game is played entirely on your device — the opponents are code running next to you, not a service somewhere. The only connections Foista ever makes are to Apple:
- iCloud — to keep your game in your own iCloud account, if you turn that on.
- The App Store — when you look at, buy or restore the in-app purchase.
There are no connections to any non-Apple server, and Frowning Gorilla receives no data from either.
In-App Purchase
Foista offers an optional in-app purchase (the full game). All payment processing is handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. Neither Foista nor Frowning Gorilla ever sees, handles, or stores any payment details — the app receives only an Apple-signed confirmation that the purchase has been made.
Apple's privacy policy applies to the purchase transaction. You can read it at apple.com/legal/privacy.
Third-party services
Foista uses no third-party services, frameworks, or SDKs. The only code it contains is our own, plus the frameworks Apple builds into iOS and iPadOS. There are no advertising networks, analytics platforms, crash reporters, social media integrations, or external APIs.
Beta testing through TestFlight
While Foista is being tested, it is distributed through Apple's TestFlight. If you are a tester, Apple may share with us crash reports from the app, and anything you choose to send us using TestFlight's own feedback button — which can include a screenshot, your comments, your email address, and the device and iOS version you are using.
That information comes to us from Apple, through TestFlight, and we use it only to fix the app. Apple's privacy policy governs TestFlight itself. If you would rather not send any of it, don't use the feedback button — the app itself asks for nothing.
Children's privacy
Foista collects no data from anyone, including children. There is no chat, no messaging, no advertising, and no way for one player to reach another.
Changes to this policy
If Foista ever changes in a way that affects privacy — for example, if a future version adds crash reporting — this page will be updated to reflect that before the update is released. The date at the bottom of this page shows when it was last revised.
