This policy is provided by Frowning Gorilla Ltd ("Frowning Gorilla", "we", "us"), a company registered in England and Wales. It covers the PunchyCaptions app for Mac.
What data does PunchyCaptions collect?
None. Frowning Gorilla does not collect, transmit to itself, store on its own servers, or share any personal information.
The app has no analytics, no crash reporting service, no advertising SDK, and no third-party services of any kind. It does not know who you are, where you are, or how you use it.
Where do your videos and projects live?
On your Mac, in the files you choose — nowhere else. The video you import stays where it is; your project is saved as a local .punchycaptions file wherever you save it; and the captioned video you export is written to the location you pick. There is no account, no cloud storage, and no sync — PunchyCaptions has no server to send anything to.
Your work is therefore yours to look after. Keep your own backups of anything important, the same as any other document on your Mac.
What about network connections?
The PunchyCaptions app makes no network connections of its own and has no network access — it cannot, and does not, send your content anywhere. The only network activity connected with the app is handled by macOS and Apple, outside the app:
- The App Store — if you choose to buy or restore PunchyCaptions Pro. This is handled entirely by Apple; see "In-App Purchase" below.
- Apple's on-device speech model — the first time you transcribe, macOS may download Apple's speech-recognition model to your Mac so transcription can run locally. This is Apple's own model, managed by the system; your audio is not part of it and is never uploaded.
No data is sent to Frowning Gorilla, and no non-Apple servers are involved.
Speech recognition and your audio
To time captions to what's spoken, PunchyCaptions can transcribe your video's audio. This runs on your Mac, on-device, using Apple's built-in speech recognition. The only system permission the app requests is Speech Recognition, purely for this purpose.
When you transcribe, the app extracts the audio to a temporary file on your Mac and deletes it immediately afterwards. Your audio is never sent to us or to any third party.
In-App Purchase
PunchyCaptions offers an optional one-time in-app purchase (PunchyCaptions Pro) that removes the export watermark. All payment processing is handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. PunchyCaptions never sees, handles, or stores any payment information — it receives only an Apple-signed confirmation that you've purchased Pro.
Apple's privacy policy applies to the purchase transaction. You can read it at apple.com/legal/privacy.
Third-party services
PunchyCaptions uses no third-party services, frameworks, or SDKs. The only code it contains is our own, plus the frameworks Apple builds into macOS. There are no advertising networks, analytics platforms, crash reporters, social media integrations, or external APIs.
The "Rate this app" prompt
Occasionally PunchyCaptions may ask Apple to show its built-in "Rate this app" prompt. Apple controls whether and when it appears, and we receive nothing about your response.
Children's privacy
PunchyCaptions does not collect data from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If PunchyCaptions ever changes in a way that affects privacy — for example, if a future version added crash reporting — this page will be updated to reflect that before the update is released. The date at the bottom of this page shows when it was last revised.
